An essential part of this puja is listening to the Sri Satyanarayana Swami Katha (narrative). 22 The five-part story involves the origin of the puja, benefits of the puja, the potential mishaps that may occur with the forgetting performance of the puja, the magnitude of the Lord's benevolence and the importance of the Prasad, and consequences.
It is believed that Sri Satyanarayan Puja has a beneficial effect on the devotees. It is mainly performed to overcome adversity and problems. There is a very famous and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Sri SatyaNarayan at Annavaram, East Godavari District, Andra Pradesh, India.
Here, large numbers of devotees gather and offer prayers and perform puja (Vrata), right in the temple.
The Puja Vidhi (The Method of performing SatyaNarayan Puja)
The Satyanarayan Puja is dedicated to the Narayan form of Lord Vishnu. In this form, Lord Vishnu is considered as an embodiment of truth.
According to sacred Hindu Scriptures, the Satyanarayan Puja should ideally be performed in the evening. However, it can also be performed in the morning, as well.
The Puja can be performed both in the households as well as in the temples on auspicious days such as Poornima (full moon day), or Ekadashi (11TH day after full moon day).
It is usually performed to overcome adversities and also to celebrate certain events like starting of a new venture, purchase of a house, getting a job, marriage in the house, or the birth of a child.
The devotee has to fast on the day of Satyanarayana Puja. After bathing, one can begin the puja. The puja starts by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha.
One can chant names of Lord Ganesha or can sing devotional songs and 'Aarti' dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Then you have to offer 'Prasadam', usually modak or laddu and shower flowers to Lord Ganesha.
After offering prayers to Lord Ganesha, you have to perform 'Navagraha Puja'. This consists of offering prayers to the nine celestial beings (planets) in the universe. This consists of Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu.
The remaining part of the puja is dedicated to the worshipping of Lord Satyanarayana. First, you have to clean the place where the deity is placed, this is known as Pancamrta. Then you have to place the deity in the correct position and begin the worship of Lord Satyanarayana.
In this puja, the names of Lord SatyaNarayan are chanted, and Prasadams are offered to the deity together with flower petals. The main Prasadam consists of 'Charnamrita' which is a mixture of honey, milk, ghee, sugar, and yogurt.
Another mandatory and important aspect of the puja is that the story (Katha) related with the Satyanarayana Puja should be heard by all the persons participating or attending the Puja.
The Puja concludes with hymns praising Lord Satyanarayan. Aarti is sung and 'Aratika' which is a small fire-lit lamp is revolved around the image of the Lord. Once the puja gets over, Prasadam is distributed amongst the participants.

Sri Satyanarayan Katha
Sri Satya Narayan Katha is derived from the Skanda Purana, Reva Khanda.
It was originally narrated by Suta Maharishi to a gathering of rishis who were performing a 1000 year 'yajna' (sacred ritual) for the benefit of humanity.
This yajna was led by Saunaka Muni in Naimisaranya.
There are five set of chapters, stories or kathas which bring out the glory of the benevolent Lord Satya Narayan.
In each of these stories, we get to learn that the characters suffered as they did not keep their promise to perform the puja once their wishes were fulfilled.
As Lord Satya Narayan is an embodiment of truth, one needs to keep the promise given to the Lord and perform the puja to hail the great Lord SatyaNarayan once the desires or wishes get fulfilled by his grace.
So, one should never ignore the grace of Lord Satya Narayan.
Herein, we share with you the details of Sri Satya Narayan Swami Katha:

Satyanarayan Katha Story #2
Lord Satya Narayana (Bhagwan Vishnu) then narrated to Narada how and who performed the Satya Narayan Puja first.
Once upon a time, there used to live a very innocent Brahmin in a place called Sunder Kashipur.
He used to beg for his daily bread.
The poor state of the Brahmin very moved the Lord.
The Lord disguised himself as an old Brahmin and approached the poor man.
The Lord asked him why he was sad.
The Lord inquired him about his difficulties and asked him if he could help him.
The Brahmin told that he was very poor.
He said that he has to roam in search of his daily bread.
He pleaded that is there any way to be freed from this sorrow.
Upon hearing the words of the poor Brahmin, the Lord (disguised as an old Brahmin) said that Sri Satya Narayan Puja has the power to grant all the wishes of people if it is performed diligently.
The Lord told the poor Brahmin that he should perform the Sri Satya Narayan Puja and keep the fast to get rid of all his sorrows and get moksha.
The Lord then told all the details of the prayer and disappeared.
The poor Brahmin decided that he will perform the puja. With this thought in mind, he went out in the morning for the 'biksha' (alms).
With the blessings of the Lord, the Brahmin received a lot of money on that day. He bought all the things necessary for the prayer.
He performed the Satya Narayan Puja along with his family.

From then onwards, the Brahmin performed the Sri SatyaNarayan Prayers every month without fail.
The Lord went on to narrate another story.
Once the same Brahmin was performing the prayers.
A wood-cutter happened to pass by his house.
He was thirsty.
He kept the bundle of wood outside the Brahmin's house and went to quench his thirst.
He saw the Brahmin performing the Sri Satya Narayan Swami Puja.
He bowed down and asked the Brahmin what he was doing.
The Brahmin told the wood-cutter that he was performing the Satya Narayan Swami Puja. He said that whosoever performs this puja overcomes all the obstacles in life and attains wealth, wisdom, and happiness.
The Brahmin told the wood-cutter that he had acquired the wealth in the same way by performing Satya Narayan Puja.
The wood-cutter felt happy upon hearing these words from the Brahmin. He quenched his thirst and ate the puja Prasadam. He then left his house.
He was constantly thinking of Sri Satya Narayan Swami Puja.
He resolved that whatever money he would get by selling the woods today; he will use to perform the Satya Narayan Puja.
He loaded the bundle of wood on to his head and went roaming in Sunder Nagar selling the woods.
By Lord's grace, he got four times the money than usual out of the wood sale. He felt happy and bought all the necessary items for the puja.
He then went home, cleaned himself and performed the Sri Satya Narayan Puja with his family with full devotion.
He became rich and had all the pleasures of life.
At the end of his life, he reached heaven.
This ends the second chapter of Sri Satya Narayan Swami Katha.

Satyanarayan Katha Story #3
This story is about a childless merchant and his adventures.
Once there was a wise king named Ulkamuk.
He was very religious.
He used to go to the temple daily and perform charity.
He had a beautiful and pious wife.
One day they were performing the Sri Satya Narayan Puja near the banks of Madhushala River.
A wealthy merchant happened to pass by the site.
He saw the king performing the Lord Shri Satya Narayan Puja.
He anchored his boat and went towards the king.
He asked the king about the details of the Vratham.
The king told the merchant that he was performing the Lord Sri Satya Narayan Swami Vratham.
He said that whosoever does this Vratham gains worldly pleasures and attains salvation.
The merchant said to the king that he was childless and would like to perform the Vratham.
He asked the details of the Sri Satya Narayan Swami Vratham.
The king then told the merchant the entire details of the Vratham.
The merchant and his wife decided to perform the Sri Satya Narayan Swami Puja.
They performed the Lord Sri Satya Narayan Puja with full devotion.
After some time his wife Lilawati became pregnant and delivered a baby girl. They named the child Kalawati.
Lilawati reminded the merchant of his promise to keep the fast and perform Sri Satya Narayan Puja.
However, the merchant postponed the puja and said he would perform the puja when his daughter is ready to be married.
At the moment he was busy in business.
The merchant's daughter Kalawati grew up to be a beautiful girl.
Finally, Kalawati was married to a handsome boy from Kanchan Nagar.
However, the merchant forgets his promise to do the Satya Narayan Puja and Fast.
The Lord became angry with the merchant. He wanted to teach him a lesson.
After some time the merchant left for a business trip with his son-in-law. They reached a village named Ratanpur. King Chandraketu ruled that village.
It so happened that the thieves robbed the wealth of the king and left the loot at the place where the merchant was staying.
The guards reached the merchant's place and saw all the king's wealth. Taking them as robbers, the guards took the merchant and his son-in-law to the king and told him that they were responsible for the theft.
The King did not question or listened to them and ordered his guards to put them behind bars.
This was happening due to Lord Sri Satya Narayan's Maya.
At the merchant's house, the thieves robbed his entire wealth.
His wife and daughter had to beg for food.
One day, while begging for food, Kalawati came to a Brahmin's house where they were performing the Satya Narayan's puja.
Kalawati listened to the prayers and took Prasadam. She then left for home.
As it was quite, late Lilawati was worried about her daughter.
When Kalawati returned, she told her mother about the Sri Satya Narayan Swami prayers that she had witnessed at the Brahmin's house. She said that by performing this puja, all the wishes get fulfilled.
Lilawati soon recollected the long-pending promise of performing Satya Narayan Puja. She began to make preparations for the Lord Satya Narayan's Vratham.
She did the fast and performed the Satya Narayan Puja.
She pleaded the Lord for forgiveness.
Lord Satya Narayan got pleased with the prayer and fast done by Lilavati.
The Lord appeared in Chandraketu's dream and told him to return their wealth and set them free. The Lord said that if he does not do this, his kingdom will be destroyed.
The King then followed the orders of the Lord and returned all their belongings and set them free. The King told the merchant that he could now return to home.
The merchant and his son-in-law were very happy.
They bowed down before the king and left for home.
This is the end of this chapter of Lord Satya Narayan.
All should chant aloud – 'Sri Satya Narayan Swami Ji ki Jai.'
Satyanarayan Katha Story #4
Sutji went on to say that the merchant prayed first and distributed some wealth to the Brahmins.
He then started his journey home-wards along with his son-in-law. When they had gone little further, Lord Satya Narayan wanted to test them.
The Lord took the disguise of an old man and went up to the merchant.
He asked the merchant what he was carrying in his boat. He requested the merchant to give him a little from there.
However, the merchant was filled in pride and replied that there were only leaves and hay in his boat.
Upon hearing such harsh words, the Lord said, 'Your words will be true.' The Lord went from there and sat on the bank of the river.
The boat started to rise higher in water.
The merchant got surprised at this.
He checked his boat and saw that it was filled with hay and leaves only.
Seeing all this, the merchant fainted.
When the merchant came to senses, he was much worried.
However, his son-in-law consoled him and said that he should go back to the old man and ask for forgiveness.
He will set everything right.
The merchant then went up to the old man.

He bowed before him and wept in repentance.
Tears flowed from his eyes.
He begged for forgiveness and pleaded the Lord to fill his boat with wealth once again, like before.
The Lord was moved by the bhakti of the merchant and fulfilled his wish.
The merchant went up to his boat and saw it filled with wealth again.
He thanked the Lord and said he would perform Satya Narayan Swami Puja as soon as he reaches home.
He then left homewards.
When the merchant saw his home-town Ratanpur nearing, he sent a messenger in advance to inform his wife and daughter about his homecoming.
The messenger gave the news that the merchant and son-in-law have reached Ratanpur.
Lilawati had just finished with the Lord Satya Narayan Puja.
When Kalawati heard the news of the home-coming of his father and husband, she left quickly without taking the Prasad to meet her husband.
The Lord became angry with her husband and drowned her husband with the boat.
When Kalawati did not found her husband, she was shocked and fainted on the floor.
Satyanarayan Vrat Katha
The merchant was shocked and prayed to the Lord for forgiveness.
The Lord announced that Kalawati had to take the Prasad with respect and return; only then she will meet her husband.
Kalawati heard the voice and ran home to eat the Prasad.
She came back and met her husband.
The merchant became very happy.
He then did Sri Satya Narayan Puja with his family every month.
With the Lord's grace and blessings, he received all the pleasures of life. After his life, he went to heaven.
Thus, we come to the end of this chapter of Lord Satya Narayan Ji.
All should chant – 'Sri Satya Narayan Ji Ki Jai.'
Satyanarayan Katha Story #5
Sutji went on to narrate another story.
Once there was a king named Tungdhwaj.
He was very generous to his subjects.
However, he suffered a lot because of his disrespect to the prayers and Prasad of Sri Satya Narayan Swami.
He had not accepted the Prasad when it was offered to him.
Once it so happened that he was hunting in a forest.
He sat down under a tree to relax.
He saw that some villagers were doing prayers of Satya Narayan Ji.
However, because of his false ego, he did not join them neither did he bowed down before the idol of the Lord.
He did not even accept the Prasad given to him by the villagers.
He left the place without accepting the Prasad.
When he reached his kingdom, he found that everything was destroyed. All his 100 sons were lying dead on the floor.
Soon the King realized that it had happened due to his false ego and disrespect to Lord Sri Satya Narayan Ji.
He realized his mistake and started walking towards the place where the villagers were worshiping Lord Sri Satya Narayan.
When he reached the place, he offered his prayers to Swami Satya Narayan Ji and had the Prasad and Charnamrita.
He put the Charnamrita in all his sons' mouth.
By Lord's grace, all his sons became alright.
He recovered all his wealth.
He lived all his life comfortably.
At the death, he went to the heaven.
Anybody who keeps the fast and performs puja of Sri Satya Narayan attains wealth and lives happily throughout his life. He attains salvation and reaches heaven.
Here, are the names of the persons who performed Satya Narayan Puja and took re-birth are:
The Brahmin was born as Sudama and served Lord Krishna and attained Moksha. King Ulkamuk took birth as Dasharatha and became the father of Lord Shri Ram.
The merchant took birth as King Morad and got Moksha. King Tungdhwaj took birth as Kewat and served Lord Ram & got moksha.
In this way, Lord Sri Satya Narayan Puja frees us from all sorrows.

So, whosoever performs the Lord Sri Satya Narayan Swami Puja (with full devotion) will be relieved from all sorrows.
